Values & Philosophy

Kate Thompson has dedicated the past 17 years to helping people unlock their joy, growth and potential through music. Ms. Thompson provides a safe space for students to push past the vulnerabilities that may present themselves in this setting. The foundation of her studio is first to establish a relationship with the student and of course, implement laughter! With the ever evolving music scene, particularly in musical theatre, Kate Thompson makes it a priority to provide her students with vast repertoire options. Her musical specialties are classical, musical theatre, pop, jazz and contemporary. Ms. Thompson has also put a great deal of research and understanding into the male changing voice. The services provided are vocal coaching (in person & online), piano lessons and audition preparation.

Kate Thompson holds a Bachelors degree in Music Education from SUNY Fredonia and a Masters degree in Music Education from Nazareth University. She went on to teach public school music for the next 15 years. During this time, Ms. Thompson primarily taught middle school vocal and general music. In addition, she was heavily involved in musical theatre and the direction of productions on all levels. Ms. Thompson also supported several students as their accompanist at auditions and festivals. Additionally, the last five years, Kate has been a member of two Rochester based bands: Blue Sky Band and Mystic Sisters playing keyboard, auxiliary percussion and lead vocals. Ms. Thompson started her music studio in 2007 and it has continued to flourish, most recently supporting 22 students. I would love for you to consider joining our musical family.

Values & Philosophy

Ms. Thompson's approach to working with students is based upon, first, establishing a comfortable partnership with the student, as there is a great deal of vulnerability throughout this experience. Solid trusting relationships are key! The musical focus of my approach is as follows:

Assessing musical ability and knowledge by exploring basic singing/playing.

Introduction of basic technique - essential building blocks for consistency and growth

Work together to find repertoire that both suits you as a musician and individual

Integrate the students' learned/learning technique within the repertoire work

Transform the piece into a performance - presenting as confident, understanding the meaning behind the music and personally connecting with the music

Always instill confidence, encouragement and joy throughout the process

I started private voice lessons for the first time with Kate Thompson when I was 12 years old. Kate is the best teacher I've ever had. She knows what she is talking about and always is keeping your best interest in mind. Not only is she extremely knowledgeable and talented, but she also is so fun. She maintains a very comfortable environment to learn better singing technique, and always a welcoming presence. Working with Thompson was, no exaggeration, a gift. She is an incredibly gifted and passionate teacher, but she also is a wonderful human. Her listening ear and warm nature were so important to developing my voice and helping me in starting my personal music journey. She cared and invested in not only my personal growth, and that made connecting with her and being vocally vulnerable really easy. Ms Thompson; I'm not sure how to wrap up her as well as her amazing studio in just a few words. I've never met anyone that is more truly dedicated and passionate about her job. She is not only an amazing singer herself, she's very knowledgable about singing, teaching, and more than anything, inspiring others to fall in love with music like she did. As a former student of hers, she changed my singing career immensely and I could never thank her enough. Hi! My name is Madison S. and I'm writing this as a former student of Kate. When I first entered her home I was beyond nervous. I don't even think I joined my school choir yet, but I knew that I loved to sing and wanted to learn how to be better. Never have I felt so comfortable with myself enough to be able to work with Kate on how I can improve. With weeks of practice and training, I performed for the very first time by myself at a small concert. I never would have been able to do any of it, if it weren't for Kate and her constant ability to boost my confidence. I had such a pleasure learning from her, and forming a bond we still have to this day.
